Your child is doing homework.
A few minutes later they say:
“I asked AI and it already gave me the answer.”
Nothing dramatic happened.
Just a real moment many families may experience.
AI is becoming part of everyday life for many children.
Pause ✶
👀Take a Look
“What are we noticing?”
Sometimes TALK includes simply noticing something together.
You might simply say:
“What kinds of things do you use AI for?”
Or:
“What kinds of things do kids use AI for?”
One calm question you might ask is:
“What do you like about using AI?”
That may be enough for today.
❓Ask if it’s okay for us
“For our family… is this okay?”
Sometimes TALK includes helping children understand what fits your family values.
Different families may use AI differently. The goal is not to judge other families, but to help your child understand what fits your family.
Different families may place the same situation in different stoplight colors.
🟢 Green Light for Some Families:
“For our family, using AI for learning and creativity can be okay.”
🟡 Yellow Light for Some Families:
“For our family, we want to be careful that AI does not become too important or take too much time.”
🔴 Red Light for Some Families:
“For our family, using AI in secret or for inappropriate content would not be okay.”
One calm question you might ask is:
“Does using AI seem more like a green, yellow, or red light for our family?”
💬Learn Your Why
“We believe…”
Sometimes TALK includes sharing one calm reason why something matters to your family.
“We believe technology should help our family, not replace real people or relationships.”
Or:
“We believe AI can be useful, but family and real friends matter more.”
One calm question you might ask is:
“Why do you think AI matters to people?”
Pause ✶
Then use any TALK tool that fits the moment.
Even one tool is enough.
